Mission: Dare to live beautifully

By the mid-19th century, the soul of American pottery was nearly eclipsed by the rise of automation and industrial centralization. Multi-generational pottery lineages—some spanning five generations—vanished almost overnight. By 1920, historians were left scrambling to recover the shattered fragments of this legacy; the master potters had passed, the shops were sold, and the history that remained was found only in sherds.

Yet, while some techniques were lost to time, the true significance of the craft is finally coming to light. Pottery was more than a trade; it was a pillar of the American Dream, a catalyst for technological innovation, and a vital commodity that sustained the nation through embargoes and westward expansion.

Simply put, the American story cannot be told without the kiln.

Master Potter Kilan is dedicated to the scholarship of our ceramic past and the revitalization of this essential traditional craft. It is a craft as daring as those who chose to live beautifully in a world less than beautiful by creating objects of utility and grace.
